What Is Dry Needling
Dry needling is a relatively quick treatment technique that involves the use of solid needles inserted into areas of taut or contracted muscle fibres, to treat muscular and connective tissue pain through various systemic and mechanical mechanisms. It can help decrease myofascial pain through some of the same reactions in the body as traditional acupuncture, decrease referral pain from areas of increased tension, promote local muscle relaxation, and improve mobility. During treatment, the patient typically experiences a dull-ache sensation, and a ‘twitch’ response in the muscle (either visible or deep) is a common sign of stimulating a muscle’s motor point.

If indicated and appropriate, your dry needling provider may suggest incorporating this treatment technique as part of a regular treatment session. Length of time to perform the technique depends on number of points or muscles treated, but typically takes less than a minute per point. Benefits, risks and precautions will be explained to you beforehand, and as with any other component of treatment, the choice to have needling as part of your treatment or not will be completely up to you.
